Nina Vetrova-Robinson: Paintings from the Ukrainian Avant-Garde Tradition

Dates: Friday, January 20 - Sunday, February 26

Location: Iowa Artisans Gallery & DJ Rinner Goldsmith
Address: 207 E. Washington St.

Iowa Artisans Gallery hosts the exhibit, Nina Vetrova-Robinson: Paintings from the Russian Avant-Garde Tradition, January 20- February 26, 2012.

Born in Kiev, Nina Vetrova-Robinson's paintings speak to the tradition of Ukrainian abstract Avant-Garde painting of the early 20th Century. After starting her art career in 2001, Vetrova-Robinson exhibited 24 paintings in "Avant-garde Adventures, " held in 2004 at the National Art Museum of Ukraine. In 2005 she was included in the Modern Encyclopedia of Ukraine. Her work is also included in the National Art Museum of Ukraine as well as the Institute of Modern Russian Culture, in various online art exhibition and compilations, and in private collections both here and abroad.

Vetrova-Robinson's background includes two well-known Ukrainian painters; she is the granddaughter of Vadym Meller and Nina Genke-Meller. Her grandfather was a Ukrainian-Russian painter, avant-garde Cubist and Constructivist artist who also engaged in theatrical design, book illustration and architecture. He was the first artist to be awarded a gold medal in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (Art Deco) in Paris in 1925. Vetrova-Robinson’s grandmother, Nina Genke-Meller helped found the Verbovka Village Folk Centre in the Ukrainian province of Kiev, where local craft artisans made carpets, pillows, shawls and belts using the designs of some of the foremost Russian avant-garde artists of the day. She also served as an artist and graphic designer, notably for “Golfstream,” the publishing house led by Ukrainian poet-Futurist Mykhail Semenko. A resident of Cedar Rapids, Vetrova-Robinson moved to the US with her American-born husband in 1993.

Description
Zoë Keating is a one-woman orchestra. She uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. Zoë is known for both her use of technology - which she uses to sample her cello onstage - and for her DIY ethic which has resulted in the sale of over 40,000 copies of her self-released albums and a devoted social media following.

Born in Canada and classically trained from the age of eight, Zoë spent her 20's working at software startups while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Inevitably, she combined the two and developed her now signature style while improvising for late night crowds at her San Francisco warehouse. Zoë's grassroots, label-less approach has garnered her much public attention and press. She has been profiled on NPR's All Things Considered and awarded a performing arts grant from the Creative Capital Foundation. Zoë is also a governor of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, sits on the board of CASH Music and was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Zoë has spent much of 2011 touring across North America, young baby in tow, to support her latest album, Into the Trees, which has spent 49 weeks on the Billboard classical charts.

About Talkdemonic
In Portland, Oregon, Kevin O'Connor began his pursuit in 2004 for new frontiers in percussion and analog sounds. What was he looking for? Something entirely new in something old. And so he began collecting. Dusty Italian Crumar synths and pristine Moogs, rickety Baldwins and warbly Wurlitzers, pure-sounding Rhodes and cranky old Korgs. Sounds upon floating, gritty and gorgeous sounds, with a muscular backbone of beats alongside a brainy live drumkit. Talkdemonic was born. While Kevin was beating out a new path in the already innovative music community of Portland, his friend and violist Lisa Molinaro joined him shortly thereafter to lend her string skills to further texturize Talkdemonic's alluring sounds. The duo became unstoppable.

Fast forward seven years. Talkdemonic's 2004 Mutiny Sunshine is now considering a downtempo classic amongst fans, while their sophomore Beat Romantic thrust them into indie spotlight. In 2008, Kevin and Lisa released Eyes At Half Mast, a union of haunting strings passages, toungue and groove beats and drums, and lush nostalgic synth layers that call to mind your personal soundtrack to some inner, secret and special moment of your life. Ruins is the fourth Talkdemonic studio album, and it effectively takes everything about the first three Talkdemonic records and blasts it into the stratosphere.

Description
Experience political satire at its funniest - and most musical! – with the singing troupe that puts the “mock” in Democracy. Selecting from a repertoire of albums developed over the past thirty years, The Capitol Steps offer a hilarious evening of parody that plays no favorites as they scrutinize our favorite political issues and the scandal of the day.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

The Capitol Steps have been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their "Politics Takes a Holiday" radio specials.

Description
From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

Travelling Light
A new play by Nicholas Wright

How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude everyother cinematic pioneer for years to come?

In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary
way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.
