CoSign is sponsored by MidWestOne Bank, the City of Iowa City, and The Iowa City Downtown District

The CoSign project is a collaboration among the American Sign Museum, The Iowa City Downtown District, the City of Iowa City, presenting sponsor MidWestOne Bank and the greater Iowa City community to design and install creative new business signage in the Downtown District to increase economic activity in the community. The new signage is created by helping partner small business owners, visual artists and designers, and professional sign fabricators, all coordinated by the ICDD.

In 2017, CoSign called for a national launch of the turn-key program and Downtown Iowa City was one of six chosen communities. Upon the completion of the program, Downtown Iowa City unveiled 12 new pedestrian oriented projecting blade signs that were locally designed and fabricated custom for the downtown businesses. In 2019, the ICDD has brought the CoSign program back, tailored for our community, to help offer substantial matching grants to install impactful projecting signage, as well as to help subsidize through CoSign+ other creative storefront enhancements.

Projects will be judged competitively based on recommendations from the ICDD Storefront and Signage Guidelines. This document, filled with clear visual examples of best practices, is a great place to start brainstorming, as well as understanding what types of signage and façade improvements might work best for your particular storefront.

CoSign 2019 will offer competitive 50/50 matching grants up to $3,000 for compelling, creative, projecting storefront signage that exceeds expectations and enriches the streetscape of Downtown Iowa City.

CoSign+ 2019 will offer competitive 50/50 matching grants up to $1,000 for permanent storefront enhancements that creatively improves business façades such as new lighting, tiled entryways, substantial paint jobs, and more. Any impactful permanent improvement will be considered.
