Dana R. Fisher @Prairie Lights
February 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFree
PEACE Iowa and the University of Iowa Sociology Department present Dana R. Fisher, who will talk about her research with activists and her latest book: American Resistance: From the Women’s March to the Blue Wave. “American Resistance is an important book, not only as a portrait of our moment but also as a challenge to traditional understandings of protest politics. Dana R. Fisher shows how wrong it is–especially in the Trump era–to draw sharp lines between protest and electoral action. She details what drove millions to come out in revolt against Trump, explains who they are, and demonstrates how the early marches translated into the unprecedented political engagement of 2018. There are lessons here for 2020 and beyond.”–E. J. Dionne, Jr
Dana R. Fisher is a professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. Professor Fisher is the author of Activism, Inc.: How the Outsourcing of Grassroots Campaigns Is Strangling Progressive Politics in America, and her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Science Magazine, various programs on NPR, and on numerous podcasts. Fisher’s research on protest was profiled in “The Collectors: Political Action,” a documentary short by FiveThirtyEight and ESPN Films.
