The purpose of this event is to help bridge the divide between people of different cultural, ethnic, religious, and social groups through open and meaningful conversation without judgement. The event consists of people who have faced prejudice or discrimination in their lives volunteering as “books,” conversing with “readers” about their background and challenges they have encountered through 15–20-minute conversations in a safe space. This event will allow readers to become better prepared for interacting with a variety of different people in their future. The ultimate goal of the Human Library event will be to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the diversity in the Iowa City community.
