Larry Baker – Tell It Slant

Local author Larry Baker will read from his newest book published by Ice Cube Press, Tell It Slant. Described by Ice Cube Press as “an intimate account told by a dying woman desperate to keep talking, to stay alive,” the novel follows Emily Sterling, a woman dying of breast cancer. Caroline Leavitt, author of Days of Wonder, praises Tell It Slant as “gorgeous, gorgeous prose,” while Jincy Willett, author of The Writing Class, says, “[Tell It Slant] explores in depth the labyrinthine relationship between fiction and its writer’s life experiences, between truth and fact. How can we tell the truth about ourselves without betraying those around us? Slant communicates directly, unsparingly, with readers and writers alike.”
Larry Baker writes about memorable characters, and he is something of a character himself. Baker earned his doctorate at the University of Iowa and is a former member of the Iowa City Council. He is included on Iowa City’s Literary Walk and is the author of six novels. He possesses an outsized personality that he employs gleefully, if self-mockingly, for the promotion of his work. He is by turns funny and erudite, and both characteristics find their way into his work.
