Looking for Work Online: Resources and Strategies

In this information session, Victor will present a slideshow about job hunting resources in the Iowa City Public Library and Johnson County area. He will also go over what to expect when looking for work online, how to prepare, and where to start. Though many individuals might already have perfected their job hunting strategies, utilizing books, websites, and in-person career resources, this information session provides an overview about those resources for adults and teens who are new or returning to the job market.
We’ll start with the books and in-person resources at the Iowa City Public Library that attendees can utilize to prepare for the job market. We’ll talk briefly about how to start with a CV or resume, and what to do if you’re unsure about your work history and job skills. We’ll point attendees to books, in-person meetings, or websites that could help you review your information before looking for work online.
For our exploration of the online job market, we’ll go over IowaWORKS.gov and the career resources available through their offices. These can be local job fairs, job programs, or other needs provided through the IowaWORKS.gov website. If time allows, we will include some exploration of popular job hunting sites like Indeed.com, LinkedIn, and others. At the end of this session, patrons should leave with confidence knowing where they might go or who they might ask for more information about looking for work in today’s job market.
We recommend that patrons who attend this session stay to work on their job searches afterwards. Be prepared to use or make an email address, type up your work history, and/or work online making accounts for various websites.
