In the book The Four Things that Matter Most: A Book About Living, Dr. Ira Byock writes that we can all incorporate the themes of love, forgiveness and gratitude into our daily lives. What do we want to tell the people we love? What do we appreciate about the people in our lives? How can our words help us heal? We never know what tomorrow may bring. How can we honor and strengthen the relationships in our lives each day?
Honoring Your Wishes, UNESCO City of Literature, and the Senior Center invite you to participate in a community writing project this summer. Join us for a writing circle at The Center and receive guidance for writing an essay on the themes of love, forgiveness, and gratitude. At the first session we will discuss these themes and consider the various forms that essays might take. At the second session, we will check in on writers’ progress and offer further support as each piece takes shape.
For those who choose, essays may be submitted for judging by a community panel. The first prize winner will be invited to read their submission on the evening of Sunday, October 7, 2018 as a part of the UNESCO City of Literature Iowa City Book Festival. The top two winners will be invited to have lunch with Dr. Ira Byock on Monday, October 8. The top three winners will be selected to publish in local media and will receive a signed copy of one of Dr. Ira Byock’s books.
