Iowa City musicians Nielo Gaglione and the late Dr. John Rapson created the band MEKTOUB,
“destiny” in Arabic, as a duo that soon blossomed into a quintet (Mandole and Vocal, Drum, Bass,
Fiddle and Woodwinds). One month before Rapson passed away, the band recorded an
impromptu moment of Mediterranean folk-jazz music which would turn out to be Rapson’s last
recorded performance. Three years later, Gaglione produced an album of these recordings named
Elizabeth in honor of Rapson’s wife, supported by John and Virginia Stamler. The James is
honored to host the release of this album in a celebration of life, art, and love.
