Show Description
Red Cedar Chamber Music’s directors and core ensemble, violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian, are joined by violinist Alex Norris for a program of music for two violins and cello. The standard string trio is violin, viola, cello. The less common trio, two violins and cello, has fewer works written for it. The program opens with a charming Boccherini Sonata. Next, we give the Red Cedar treatment to Bach’s Sonata #4 for Violin and Harpsichord Obligato, with Miera on the solo part and Alex and Carey playing the right and left hand of the harpsichord. Jan Boland’s newly published Flower Sonatas by Oswald for two trebles and bass give us a different and mildly Celtic baroque flavor. The largest work on the program is Dvorak’s Terzetto, originally written for two violins and viola, it is presented here with the cello part arranged by Red Cedar. The program also includes Stephen Cohn’s Serenade. Essentially a love song, this beautiful piece was written for his friend’s wedding. The concert concludes by paying homage to the “missing” trio member, the viola. Michael Kimber’s work Violas on Fire! will bring the concert to an exuberant close.
