Starch-based Collage Workshop + Site-specific Installation
July 16 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

with Lydia Diemer
Saturday July 16, 1-3pm, and Saturday July 23, 10a-3p (12-1p lunch break)
at the IC Press Co-op (225 N. Gilbert)
pay-what-you-can: $10-140
This workshop merges techniques from the history of broadsides and the printmaking tradition of chine collé with potential forms of site-specific installation. The method of starch-based collage can be used to temporarily attach paper (blank, drawn, painted, printed…) on the surfaces of walls, ceilings, floors, sidewalks, and objects. This technique repurposes and activates traditional modes of collage, offering uses for your art leftovers, found bits, misprints, and doodles. During the first session, we’ll learn the process, discuss and try out different papers, drawing, painting, and printing materials, thoroughly explore the nori paste, and practice installing and de-installing. We’ll also browse contemporary and art historical images for context and inspiration, from wheat-pasted advertisements to tactics of activism and resistance. After a week of independent work, gathering and generating new collage items, we’ll reconvene to transform ICPC’s entryway with a temporary, collaborative installation. Paper and additional drawing/printing/painting materials are the responsibility of each participant. Tips and guidance will be shared prior to the first meeting. All other supplies are provided.
Open to ages 14+. Masks required.
Registration deadline: July 9
*PS1 workshops are pay-what-you-can thanks to support from Kum & Go and community members. $119 is the true cost of the workshop, and we encourage participants to select the cost that they can afford, or pay a little extra to support future sliding-scale fees.
