In the 1830s, railroads came to America. As the movement spread westward, there were proposals for rail lines in Iowa by the 1850s. The race resulted in Iowa City becoming the “end of the line” westward for a time when the rail line was completed to our town during a bitter cold December day. This story will tell the tale of this first railroad in Iowa City as well as the subsequent passenger rail lines that were established here.
