With funding from the German Embassy in Washington, the UI Department of German will host a public panel discussion on the history and current status of the Middle Eastern Refugee Crisis.

The discussion will be led by Yasemin Mohammad, Assistant Professor in the UI Department of German, and will also feature Herbert Quelle (Chicago Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany), Ahmed Souaiaia (Associate Professor, UI Department of Religious Studies), and Nell Gabiam (Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Iowa State University).

By bringing together a range of experts, we hope to illuminate this complex and contested issue from multiple perspectives, with an emphasis on the challenges faced by Germany in accepting over 1 million refugees since 2015.
