Check out all the fun Totally Tweens Summer Reading Program events we have planned just for 3rd-6th graders every Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. from June 6-August 8!
June 6: Shelter Pets Service Project-Start the summer off by helping out the animals of the Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center. We’ll learn about the needs of shelter animals and make toys and tools to provide enrichment for animals waiting for homes.
June 13: Who Are You? Would you rather play video games all day or be outside all day? Would you rather live in Minecraft or go to school at Hogwarts? Decide who you are today by answering these questions and many more in a game of “Would You Rather.” Enjoy snacks after you find out what makes you unique and what you have in common with others.
June 20: Egg Drop Challenge-Using limited materials and engineering ingenuity, construct a contraption to keep an egg intact from a high fall. Find a way to beat gravity or you’ll end up with egg on your face.
JUne 27: The Buildings of Bugs with the Insect Zoo- Join the ISU Insect Zoo to learn about the many buildings made by the bugs of the world. Afterwards, get up close and personal with the insect engineers on display.

July 11: Mad Mixture with the Grout Museum- The Grout Museum presents an amazing mix of science experiments and demonstrations. Learn about temperature and matter with liquid nitrogen. Find out about chemical reactions with fire and kitchen experiments. Finally, make observations about animal behavior with a special snake guest.
July 18: Life-Size Games- Don’t just play games, become a part of the game as we bring familiar board games and apps to life. Check out our life-sized Chutes and Ladders, Angry Birds, Jenga, and more during this drop-in hour of fun.
July 25: Author Visit with Claudia McGehee- Do you love writing or making art? Join local author and artist, Claudia McGehee, as she talks about her creative process. Learn how she creates her scratchboard art and create your own piece of art to take home.
August 1: LittleBits Invention Workshop- Use craft supplies and littleBits, the snapable circuit pieces, to be silly, try out wacky ideas, make lots of mistakes and let your imaginations run wild. We’ll form invention teams and see how many solutions you can come up with to common problems.
August 8: International Food Taste Test- Broaden your culinary horizons by trying finger foods from around the world. We’ll give an overview of each featured culture including favorite books from or about each country.
