Please join us for a reading and conversation with Vala Thordds of her newly published translation of Kristín Ómarsdóttir’s Swanfolk, and Aron Aji, of his newly published translation of Murathan Mungan’s Valor: Stories.

Aron Aji is Director of Translation Programs at the University of Iowa and former president of the American Literary Translators Association. A native of Turkey, he has translated many works from Turkish including Bilge Karasu’s The Garden of Departed Cats (National Translation Award), and A Long Day’s Evening (NEA Literature Fellowship; shortlisted for the PEN Translation Prize). His translation of Ferid Edgü’s Wounded Age and Eastern Tales is forthcoming from NYRB in early 2023 and his recently-released co-translation of Murathan Mungan’s Tales of Valor (Northwestern University Press) received the Global Humanities Translation Prize.

Vala Thorodds is a poet, publisher, and editor, as well as a translator from Icelandic. Her work has appeared in publications including The GuardianGranta, and The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem, and she recently received a PEN/Heim Translation Fund grant for her translation of the novel Swanfolk by Kristín Ómarsdóttir (HarperVia). Her previous translation of Ómarsdóttir’s selected poems, Waitress in Fall, was a White Review and Sunday Times poetry book of the year. She is an MFA candidate in Literary Translation at the University of Iowa, where she was awarded an Iowa Arts Fellowship.
