World Wednesday: Celebrate the Chinese Qixi Festival with Ying!

August 4 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

World Wednesdays are the perfect opportunity to learn about and celebrate world cultures! Each week we will learn by doing with a craft, game or activity that explores a different part of the world. School age children are invited to join us online, and/or with a Take & Make Kit to be picked up from the library ahead of time, for an activity that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures.

The upcoming Qixi Festival (August 14) is a Chinese festival celebrating the annual meeting of the cowherd and weaver girl in mythology. The festival originated from the romantic legend of two lovers, Zhinü and Niulang, whose love was not allowed, thus they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver River. Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day. For our last World Wednesday, Ying will share the story of the folktale as well as a poem in English and Chinese about the cowherd and weaver girl, and together you can create your own moveable papercraft that tells the story of their meeting. Please register for to receive the Zoom link as well as a craft kit containing the supplies for the papercraft to be picked up from the library prior to the program.

This event is open to the public.
