World Wednesday: Powwow Dancing with Kathy Shuckahosee

July 14, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Pre-recorded event
Video available starting at Jul 14 2021 – 2:00pm

World Wednesdays are the perfect opportunity to learn about and celebrate world cultures! Each week we will learn by doing with a craft, game or activity that explores a different part of the world. School age children are invited to join us online, and/or with a Take & Make Kit to be picked up from the library ahead of time, for an activity that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures.

Join us this afternoon as we learn about Powwow dancing with a Iowan family who has participated in Powwow dancing competitions for years. Kathy is a member of the Lakota Nation and her two children are part of the Meskwaki Nation and all three are seasoned Powwow competitors. Learn about the tradition of clothing, movement and music with Powwow dancing and how the dances are passed from generation to generation.

This event is open to the public.

Experience Mi Casa, Your Casa 2.0 in Iowa CityJune 10 - July 10th

The Mi Casa, Your Casa 2.0 red frames, each in the shape of a small house, set alongside one another will be placed in three main areas of the pedestrian mall. Inside each “casa”, there is a swing and a ring of lights lining the bottom. When the house is empty, the lights glow dimly to welcome the next visitor. Once someone steps inside, the lights release a more powerful glow, indicating that someone is home.
