Iowa City Downtown District’s Review of City Council Candidates for District C Special Election

– ICDD City Council Interview Highlights –

(Iowa City, IA) – February 26, 2025 – The Iowa City Downtown District (ICDD) thanks City Council candidates Ross Nusser and Oliver Weilein for their interest in serving on the Iowa City City Council. As part of its commitment to fostering a thriving downtown, the ICDD has engaged with the candidates through a structured review process to help inform the community ahead of the March 4, 2025, Special Election.

The ICDD encourages voters to explore candidate questionnaire responses, reviewer summaries, and assessments on the ICDD Advocacy page to make an informed decision. ICDD provides vision, leadership, and influence on a range of issues that shape the downtown community. Our work focuses on fostering welcoming public spaces, attracting cultural and business interest, and implementing strategic initiatives that enhance the district. A thriving downtown benefits the entire Iowa City community by strengthening the city’s tax base, protecting surrounding residential property values, and supporting essential public services such as parks, recreation, public safety, and affordable housing initiatives.

While the ICDD does not endorse candidates, we recognize the importance of engaging with potential community leadership. To help inform the public, we invited candidates to participate in a policy questionnaire and conducted in-person interviews to assess their alignment with downtown priorities and ICDD’s Advocacy Statement. A committee of ICDD stakeholders reviewed and summarized these responses, ensuring a well-rounded evaluation of each candidate. Highlights of the in-person conversations and questionnaire can be found on the ICDD Advocacy page.
