Retail Associate

We’re looking for a part-time retail associate to start as soon as we find the right candidate. The Prairie Kitchen Store is a beautiful boutique kitchenware shop in Iowa City’s historic downtown Northside Neighborhood.

We offer a wide variety of kitchenware and gifts, as well as on-tap olive oil and balsamic vinegar, knife sharpening, and fresh-made pizza dough.  We sell everyday items as well as bespoke kitchen gear, gourmet foods, knives, barware, bakeware and more to our wonderful Iowa City area community.

We strive for a comfortable, casual and welcoming work environment. You will be working alongside the owners of this family-owned and operated business. We place a high value on customer service skills – we are looking for someone who can start conversations and go that extra mile to make connections with customers about cooking and kitchenware.

Our store hours are 10-5 Tuesday-Saturday, and 10-4 Sunday (we are closed on Mondays). Some shifts will report earlier for cleaning and setup duties.  You must be available to work a combination of weekdays Tuesday-Friday, from 9:30 – 5pm, as well as some Saturday or Sunday shifts.  Saturday or Sunday shifts will be required Nov. 1 through Dec. 24.

Duties include, but are not limited to; processing transactions, assisting customers with product inquires and selection, merchandising and stocking displays, setting up the olive oil and balsamic tasting table, receiving, unpacking, and pricing, box tear down, taking out trash, sweeping, dusting, and mopping.  There will be some heavy lifting/moving of boxes and other kitchen items (up to 20 lbs.), as well as walking up and down stairs frequently as our product storage is on the second level. It’s a very active job, and you will spend most of the time on your feet doing a variety of activities – which makes it fun and varied!

The holiday shopping period is our busiest season of the year, and we need all hands-on deck.  For this reason, you must be available to work weekly shifts from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, including a combination of Saturdays and/or Sundays. This includes the days before and after Thanksgiving and the days before Christmas.  It’s also the most fun time of the year, with the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and helping customers pick out great gifts!

Pay starts at $15/hour and includes a paid lunch break and rest breaks for each shift. Pay rates increase on a set schedule, based on time in position.
