Position Description: | The University of Iowa School of Music invites applications for a collaborative colleague to serve as Associate Director of Choral Studies at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning in the Fall 2025. This is a full-time, one-year position, renewable up to three years pending positive reviews and budgetary approval.
The choral department at Iowa has a long, rich tradition of excellence in performance and in the training of graduate choral conductors (MA and DMA). Choral conducting graduates have held prominent positions in all levels of choral music—from primary/secondary education to collegiate positions—and in houses of worship and community/professional choruses, nationally and internationally. The School of Music provides conservatory-like instruction at a Big Ten research institution, offering graduate and/or undergraduate degrees in composition, conducting, jazz studies, music education, music theory, music therapy, musicology, and performance. The School enrolls approximately 450 majors and has more than 50 full-time faculty members, situated in the Voxman Music Building, a state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2016 in downtown Iowa City. Nestled along the Iowa River and surrounded by rural rolling hills, Iowa City perennially ranks as one of America’s best places to live. Featuring a college-town atmosphere with big-city cultural richness, the Iowa City area has something for everyone including Big Ten sports and world-class music, literature, dance, and theater. The successful candidate will lead one or more choral ensembles in the School of Music, and teach graduate choral literature and undergraduate choral conducting. The candidate will work closely with the Director of Choral Studies in administering the choral ensembles and graduate program, building on the program’s tradition of success and excellence while responding to current trends in the profession. The candidate is expected to be involved in state, regional, and national professional choral organizations and to serve as a resource to choral music educators in the state. Start date: August 20, 2025 Review of Applications will begin immediately. The position will remain open until filled. To ensure full consideration, candidates should provide the following required documents:
