– Free Northside Outside Live Music Series Curated by The Englert Theatre –
(Iowa City, IA) May 2, 2024 – The Iowa City Downtown District, in collaboration with The Englert Theatre, announced this week the launch of the Northside Saturday Nights music series. Taking place at the Northside Outside community area, this series is curated by The Englert Theatre and kicks off this weekend. The series will spotlight local musical talents through live, outdoor performances every Saturday evening from May 4th to September 28th.
Sponsored by Hills Bank, with additional support from Dr. Suzanne Stock, Orthodontist, Dr. Ann Connors DDS – Northside Family Dentistry, and Phelan Tucker Law LLP, Northside Saturday Nights will showcase 22 free performances this summer and fall. Held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or utilize the available tables along the street while enjoying neighborhood food from the area’s restaurants. Families and friends are invited to come savor the sights, sounds, and flavors of the beautiful Northside as they enjoy an evening out on the town.
“The Northside has always been a center for locals – a place to connect with fellow Iowa Citizens and grab a drink or some food or catch an intimate show”, remarked Brian Johannesen, Programming Director of The Englert Theatre. “With that in mind, The Englert has curated a summer’s worth of Saturday shows that highlight the incredible local music scene we have here in town. The artists represent those who have been making Iowa City a hotbed for artistic talent for years, as well as some newcomers making their mark on our scene and folks from nearby, drawn to the magnetic artistic energy of our town. I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to bask in Iowa City summer with these musicians and the Northside businesses who keep the local dream alive.”
The Northside Saturday Nights series coincides with the much-anticipated return of the Northside Outside initiative, revitalizing North Linn Street from Market Street to the Hamburg Inn alleyway into a pedestrian-friendly enclave teeming with community vibrancy. Among the highlights of this year’s revival is the touch-up of the North Linn Street mural by artist Drew Etienne, promising to once again captivate passersby with its resplendent floral motifs alongside new playful elements that will be introduced this year.
“The Northside Outside was created out of necessity but has evolved through community feedback and desire. Not only is it a boon for the businesses in this district, but it provides a unique space for Iowa City to gather, create, and explore as we continue to expand on its possibilities,” said Nick Craig, owner of Brix Cheese Shop & Wine Bar. “As a small business owner and lifelong community member, I’m proud to be part of its stewardship and am incredibly excited to be partnering with The Englert Theatre on this music series. I can’t wait to see what’s to come through continued support of the city.”
The series will close out with the 28th Annual Northside Oktoberfest on September 28th. More details, including the lineup and tickets, will be announced later this summer.
