@icdeadwood has been a staple in Downtown Iowa City, embodying the essence of a true neighborhood bar. After 26 years, Jim Bell passed the torch to Ben Mummey in 2017, who had been the bar’s manager for the past decade.

Jim Bell took over Deadwood Tavern in his late 30s, transitioning from a family background in farming to bar ownership. His predecessor, Jim Strabala, had established the bar’s reputation over 25 years, making it a cherished spot for locals. Under Bell’s ownership, Deadwood thrived as a unique hybrid of a townie and student bar in a city where venues often catered to just one group.

Ben Mummey, now the owner of Deadwood, is no stranger to the local bar scene. His father owned Mum’s Saloon, a well-known establishment in Iowa City that closed over a decade ago. Mummey’s acquisition of Deadwood continues his family’s legacy in the city’s bustling downtown area.

Deadwood Tavern’s charm lies in its ability to attract a diverse clientele. From college students and graduate students to longtime residents, the bar offers a welcoming atmosphere for all. The tavern’s amenities, including pool tables, pinball machines, and a classic photobooth, provide endless entertainment. Its simple offerings of drinks and small snacks create a laid-back vibe. Sally, one of the longstanding bartenders, continues the tradition of serving free chili or other delights during Hawkeye football season.

Bell’s commitment to tradition and community has been a cornerstone of Deadwood’s success. He hired staff members passionate about various arts, believing that such passion translated into excellent customer service. Each new employee marked their arrival by hammering a nail into a wooden fish that used to hang above the bar.

Regular patrons appreciate Deadwood’s holiday spirit, as the bar remains open on Easter and Christmas Day, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the regulars.

Whether enjoying their famous spicy Bloody Mary on the patio or engaging in lively conversations with Iowa City’s most colorful characters, every visit is memorable. The tavern even welcomed a visit from actor Will Ferrell, adding to its rich tapestry of stories.
