You don’t need an excuse — it’s always a good time to come to downtown Iowa City. But some weeks are even better than others, and this October 13-20 is a can’t miss.
That third week of October is one of the most electric of the year, with two major festivals that will bring books, films, their creators and their fans to the Downtown District. The perfect pairing to downtown’s dozens of restaurants featuring a wide variety of cuisine, acclaimed performing arts venues with world-class entertainment, and boutique shops offering unique wares.
The Iowa City Book Festival, presented by the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, will run from Oct. 13-20. As things heat up at that festival, the Refocus Film Festival presented by FilmScene joins the schedule with programming from Oct. 17-20. Those are two big reasons to visit Iowa City – or to stay put if you live here.
Both festivals celebrate creativity – from the genesis of an idea through the process of writing or filming, editing or publishing – where the finished product is just a part of the journey.
The Book Festival, now in its 16th year, features more than 50 events, nearly all of them free, that will give attendees a chance to hear from and connect with authors, learn about the creative process, discuss ideas, and explore literary Iowa City.
Refocus Film Festival offers over 30 films celebrating the art of adaptation. A film festival fit for a City of Lit, Refocus examines the relationship between page and screen and then takes it further by melding music, visual art, and more into the celebration. Grab a pass, or jump in the rush line, to take part in Iowa’s unique contribution to the film world.
