As part of the City of Iowa City’s Downtown Streetscape Update Plan, another important phase begins Monday, March 11th with the Dubuque Street Reconstruction Project. The project includes the reconstruction of the street between Iowa Avenue and Washington Street and will take place this spring and summer. The City awarded the project to Portzen Construction, Inc. which previously helped downtown with the Washington Street and Ped Mall renovations.

City infrastructure such as water main, sewage, and streetscape elements have hit their lifespan. Some, are more than 100 years old and it’s time for a much-needed update that will bring a fresh, new look to the downtown block. The street will get a new makeover including a new sewer and water main, widened sidewalks, overhead lighting, bicycle racks, beautiful planters, and more. The street is estimated to re-open and be completed by late August and will look great once it’s finished! Per the City, the tentative schedule has a substantial completion date of August 23rd and final completion date of September 20th.
While streetscapes are important and necessary updates to the City’s infrastructure, they are impactful to our businesses. We encourage the community to continue to visit their favorite shops, restaurants, bars, and services on the street. It will be closed to vehicular traffic, but pedestrian access will be maintained and businesses will remain open.
