Join FilmScene and the Iowa City Public Library for a special Pay-What-You-Can screening of “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” the new film adaptation of Judy Blume’s landmark 1970 middle-grade novel. After the screening at FilmScene at the Chauncey, stay for the panel discussion “Let’s Talk About It: Puberty, Periods, and Paperbacks,” featuring experts in middle-grade literature and pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

In the film, 11-year-old Margaret is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school, while asking big questions about religion and faith spurred by her parents’ interfaith marriage.

Starting April 1, the Iowa City Public Library will have 30 free copies of “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” to give away so you can read the book before viewing the film. Ask for your copy at the children’s desk anytime the library is open! One copy per family, please, while supplies last. The book is also available for checkout in print, e-book, and e-audio.

This event is intended for adolescents and their families. The Pay-What-You-Can film screening and panel discussion will take place at FilmScene at the Chauncey, 404 E. College St.
