Film Scene Community Partners screening of Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of José Sarria

FilmScene Community Collaborations is screening a U of I alumni award-winning documentary about the first openly gay man to run for public office in 1961 – and he ran in heels. José Sarria was a Latinx World War II veteran and drag performer at San Francisco’s infamous bohemian Black Cat Cafe, frequented by Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. The film is written and directed by Joe Castel, 1990 U of I graduate.  The 90 minute documentary will be followed by a panel discussion with the director, Executive Producer and moderated by drag performer Hazel Sanchez-Belle. The screening is at Film Scene The Chauncey, 6:30 pm, Suggested Donation: $10
