As the original capitol to the state of Iowa from 1846-1857, The Old Capitol Museum seeks to educate the university, local, and national communities on the continuing significance of the humanities, as an invigorated and distinguished building that serves as a center of culture and civic discourse for the State of Iowa, through public outreach initiatives, educational programming, exhibitions, and academic scholarship.

The Old Capitol remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the state of Iowa. In the many years since the cornerstone was laid, the building has served state legislatures, countless university uses, and has undergone multiple additions and renovations. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Old Capitol Museum welcomes you to explore our state and university history, changing exhibitions, and a venue like no other. Year-round programming with special events held weekly. Coordinate with museum staff for scheduling events.
