Built in 1935 and renovated/expanded in 1984, the UI Theatre Building houses three well-equipped, state-of-the-art theatres: E.C. Mabie Theatre, a 457-seat proscenium theatre; David Thayer Theatre, a 60’x60’ flexible Black Box theatre with room for up to 172 audience members; and Alan MacVey Theatre, a 138-seat end stage theatre with a full-stage projection screen, which serves as home to student-driven productions with an emphasis on new play development. The Theatre Building’s beautiful glass lobby opens onto the west bank of the Iowa River. The Department of Theatre Arts plays a key role in the university’s Performing Arts At Iowa ecosystem.
