Exciting Advocacy Wins for Downtown Businesses
The Iowa City Downtown District (ICDD) is thrilled to announce some major advocacy victories following the City of Iowa City Council Meeting on September 17th, 2024. Through strategic and collaborative efforts, we successfully worked with council members to advocate for key changes to the downtown parking system that will positively impact both businesses and visitors. The council has approved two significant updates based on our advocacy (you can view the full advocacy letter), ensuring that our downtown continues to thrive as a vibrant hub for commerce and community.
- First, a new night and weekend parking permit has been established, providing a more convenient option for those who work or visit downtown during these times.
- Second, street meter rates have been reduced from $3 to $2.25 per hour, making downtown more accessible and affordable.
These changes would not have been possible without the hard work and collaboration of Councilmembers Megan Alter, Mazahir Salih, Shawn Harmsen, Laura Bergus, Josh Moe, and Mayor Teague, who listened closely to the needs of business owners and community members alike. Another thank you to Greater Iowa Inc for their support of the ICDD advocacy.
As we look ahead, the ICDD remains focused on building upon this success. Our next priority is ensuring effective communication and signage for key programs like Fare Free Transit and First Hour Free Parking programs. These initiatives are essential for keeping downtown accessible and welcoming for everyone. We’re excited to continue partnering with the City of Iowa City to support these efforts and keep downtown Iowa City an attractive destination for businesses, residents, and visitors.
