Downtown Iowa City’s Cultural & Entertainment District
(Iowa City, IA) – January 21, 2025 – The Downtown Iowa City Cultural & Entertainment District announced today the schedule and lineup for Free Week. Presented by X Marks the Arts, the winter arts and culture festival showcases a celebration of music, theater, film, literature, visual arts, and more. Spanning five days from February 18th to 22nd, the festival boasts a full programming schedule with over 40 free events and performances across more than 20 venues within the Downtown Iowa City Cultural & Entertainment District.
Iowa City’s Free Week draws inspiration from Austin’s renowned Free Week in the Red River Cultural District, adapting the concept to celebrate the unique character of Iowa City’s thriving arts community. “This festival embodies the energy, creativity, and diversity that make Iowa City’s arts scene so vibrant,” said Christopher Hunter, Director of Marketing at the Iowa City Downtown District. “Free Week is an open invitation for everyone to experience the best of our city’s arts, with free admission to every event, ensuring that everyone can join in the celebration. The dedication of these venues and their exceptional programming is what defines the cultural creativity that makes Iowa City truly unique.” By blending Austin’s innovative concept with Iowa City’s distinct identity, Free Week creates an inclusive and engaging platform that highlights the vibrancy of the area’s arts and culture.
Held during the quieter winter months, Free Week is designed to energize the community by offering a robust lineup of engaging activities that appeal to all ages. From live performances and interactive workshops to thought-provoking films and literary events, the festival reinforces Downtown Iowa City as a hub of cultural exploration and creative energy. It’s an opportunity for both locals and visitors to connect with the arts, discover new venues, and celebrate the rich cultural offerings that define the “Greatest Small City for the Arts.”
The festival will feature live music at venues like The Englert Theatre, where genre-blending acts such as The Uniphonics, Alyx Rush, and Colo Chanel will showcase their electrifying fusion of hip-hop, funk, jazz, and R&B. At Elray’s Live & Dive, Nashville’s acclaimed songwriter Greylan James will take the stage, joined by 28 Days Later, the indie rock band who won the 2024 SCOPE Battle of the Bands. Meanwhile, Gabe’s Iowa City will keep the energy high with DJ sets and dance parties, as well as local showcases featuring bands like Fishbait, KL!NG, Second Half, and Good Habits.
For those who appreciate theater and comedy, Free Week offers a wide range of performances. Enjoy a unique variety of shows, including the UI Theatre’s Ten-Minute Play Festival, an evening of Dueling Pianos and comedy at Alley Cat, or a drag performance at Studio 13. Families can delight in a heartwarming production of A Year with Frog & Toad by ICON and Nolte Academy, while thrill-seekers can catch the high-energy action of SCW Pro Wrestling at the Englert.
