X Marks the Arts Presents: Free Week – A New Admission-Free Winter Festival Celebrating Downtown Iowa City’s Cultural & Entertainment District

February 18 – 22, 2025

This winter, step into the epicenter of the arts and immerse yourself in a vibrant celebration of Iowa City’s dynamic arts and cultural scene with Free Week, a new, admission-free festival presented by X Marks the Arts. Taking place from February 18th to 22nd across the Downtown Iowa City Cultural & Entertainment District, this collaborative event showcases the creativity and energy of local and regional artists in a series of free concerts, performances, workshops, and more.

Free Week is the result of a collaborative effort by the Downtown Iowa City Cultural & Entertainment District Committee, offering a unique chance to explore the vibrant venues and rich culture that shape this community— both a UNESCO City of Literature and a thriving Big Ten town. With a lineup of shows and performances offering free admission at over 15 venues, the festival energizes the quieter winter months, providing an engaging and inclusive cultural experience for all ages while drawing both new and returning visitors.

Taking inspiration from Austin’s Red River Cultural and Entertainment District, where Free Week began in 2003 as a way to support venues during slower winter months, Iowa City’s version builds on this tradition by spotlighting the best entertainment our local venues have to offer. Much like its Austin counterpart, which grew into a multi-venue event drawing tens of thousands, Iowa City’s Free Week fosters community pride while attracting new audiences to its lively Cultural & Entertainment District.

“Experience the energy of Iowa City’s arts scene this winter, as Free Week celebrates the incredible talent and cultural creativity that make this district the Greatest Small City for the Arts,” said Christopher Hunter, Director of Marketing at the Iowa City Downtown District. “This new initiative shines a spotlight on the Downtown Iowa City Cultural & Entertainment District as a premier entertainment hub in Iowa and the Midwest, encouraging everyone to connect with the venues, artists, and experiences that define Downtown Iowa City as a vibrant, year-round destination.”

From intimate performances in historic theaters to hands-on workshops and live music at iconic venues, Free Week will offer a dynamic range of cultural experiences:

  • Live Music: Enjoy performances from bands and musicians at Downtown Iowa City’s most beloved venues like The Englert Theatre and Hancher Auditorium.

  • Theater & Comedy: Experience engaging theater productions and comedy showcases, providing a lively and entertaining atmosphere.

  • Art Workshops: Engage with the creative process through free, interactive art workshops and performances at venues like Public Space One, Beadology, and more.

  • Film Screenings: Celebrate the art of film with free screenings at Filmscene that highlight the power of storytelling on the big screen.

  • Literary Events: Immerse yourself in Iowa City’s literary heritage at Prairie Lights Bookstore and the Iowa City Public Library with readings, book signings, and author talks, bringing the city’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature to life.

  • Museums & Visual Arts: Discover exhibitions and cultural treasures through programs hosted by venues like the Stanley Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History.

“Free Week is all about accessibility and connection,” said John Schickedanz, Executive Director of The Englert. “This festival invites everyone to come together, embrace our community, and experience the warmth and creativity of Iowa City’s arts scene during the quieter winter months.”

Supported by Think Iowa City, the Iowa City Downtown District, and the City of Iowa City, Free Week invites everyone to explore the unique venues, sites, and experiences that make Iowa City a vibrant, welcoming destination for the arts. Stay tuned for the full festival schedule, including participating venues, the lineup of performers, and detailed programming announcements coming in January.
