Part of Hancher’s 52nd Season

Part of Creative Matters, a program of the Office of the Vice President for Research, presented in collaboration with the University of Iowa School of Music with support from the Larry G. and Ann Howard Jones Vocal Ensemble Residency Program

A stirring work by a UI alum—sung by a peerless choir—asks what the words we speak in prayer say about us.

The Crossing, an acclaimed 18-voice choir, will be in residence at the University of Iowa School of Music for a week with UI alumnae and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, and soprano and new work champion Anika Kildegaard. The Crossing and the UI choir Kantorei will perform together at the top of the concert and music director Donald Nally will lead The Crossing in performance of Lang’s poor hymnal. Lang’s composition is a new work of original hymns intended to be sung by an imagined congregation whose sole spiritual goal is the aid of others in need.

“America’s most astonishing choir … The Crossing, led by Donald Nally, combines an embrace of the new, a social conscience, and fearless technique.” — The New York Times

“With his winning of the Pulitzer Prize … Lang, once a post-minimalist enfant terrible, has solidified his standing as an American master.” — The New Yorker

PROGRAM:
Robert CONVERY: Voyages #3, #4, and #5 (The Crossing + Kantorei)
David LANG: poor hymnal
