Call for Artists:

2025 BenchMarks Program

(*Please note, the application requests artists to upload files of their designs via a Google form. Because of this, users will need to sign in to see the application. All application information is listed below)

Get ready to unleash your creativity and make your mark on Iowa City’s vibrant downtown. The beloved BenchMarks Program is back for 2025, transforming ordinary public benches into extraordinary works of art. This is your chance to contribute to the city’s public art landscape and bring joy to our community.

Since 2012, BenchMarks has been an annual public art incubator, turning downtown Iowa City’s benches into canvases for original, community-driven artwork. Like last year, we’re focusing on the benches facing the playground outside the Iowa City Public Library, creating a vibrant and engaging space for children and families.

We’re seeking artists and designers to reimagine these benches in ways that surprise, amuse, and challenge our perception of public space. While designs that resonate with children and enhance the playful atmosphere are highly encouraged, remember that kids are sophisticated thinkers too! All creative proposals are welcome.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bold and Eye-Catching Designs: Create artwork that captures the lively spirit of the Ped Mall and maintains artistic interest throughout the year. Avoid “one-liner” designs that lose their appeal quickly.
  • Fully Fleshed-Out Submissions: We want to see your vision clearly. A simple colored drawing is sufficient, but ensure your design answers more questions than it raises.
  • Engage the Entire Bench: We favor designs that utilize the entire bench surface, rather than a single isolated subject. Think color, pattern, texture, and environment. Large expanses of white are generally discouraged.
  • Portfolio Pieces Welcome: If you have a mural or artwork that exemplifies your design concept, feel free to submit an image of that as part of your application.

Important Details:

  • Artists can submit up to three designs and may be selected for multiple benches.
  • Selected artists will receive a $350 stipend, plus a gift card to Blick Art Materials.
  • Benches are painted on-site, at the artist’s convenience, with the expectation that the area is kept clean and the bench is completed and varnished before the Iowa City Arts Festival, the first week of June.
  • A mandatory virtual orientation meeting will provide detailed instructions and material recommendations.

Key Dates:

  • Application Period: Open now until April 22nd, closing at midnight.
  • Acceptance Notifications: 4th week of April
  • Virtual Orientation: Week of April 28th
  • Painting Window: Benches must be completed and varnished by June 1st.
