Presenter: David Jepsen

The modern World Series was initiated in 1903 in response to a public outcry to pit the National League’s champion team against the new (1901) American League’s champion team. After one year without a World Series (due to petty quarrels between owners), once again the public clamored for a World Series. Every October since, with one exception, baseball enthusiasts have watched and waited for news of the World Series. This program will include unusual stories from past world championships with particular attention to fans–or as they were called in the 19th century, bugs, cranks, and even fiends. Other memorable baseball championship series will be discussed, such as recent National League and American League playoffs, the first “Colored World Series,” and a European baseball championship played in Nuremberg, Germany. Attendees need not know much about baseball to appreciate the stories. There will be some history, some baseball drama, and a bit of humor. Presenter is Oaknoll resident David Jepsen, Professor Emeritus, UI College of Education. Since retiring he has written articles and presented programs on baseball topics. Membership required.
