First Round

April 17 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

You’re invited to Downtown Iowa City’s community happy hour! This monthly gathering gives you the opportunity to meet new people, socialize, and learn about the latest happenings in the arts, business, and culture sectors of our community.

Join us at The James Theater next Wednesday night for a fascinating conversation surrounding beer, Czech history, music preservation, and filmmaking. Doug Alberhasky, owner of John’s Grocery, will be speaking alongside Katie Buehner, Director of the Rita Benton Music Library at the University of Iowa. Author S.C. “Steve” Sherman will be leading the conversation.

This April, your #firstround is free thanks to Phoebe Martin, Realtor!

We recommend parking in the Market Street Lot next to Bluebird Cafe.

Katie Buehner is the Director of the Rita Benton Music Library at the University of Iowa, and liaison librarian to all of the performing arts on campus. She holds Master’s degrees in Musicology and Library Science from the University of North Texas, and is an active member of the Music Library Association and International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centres.
Doug Alberhasky is a 7th Generation Iowa Citian, and has worked at his family business, John’s Grocery since the ripe old age of 6. He started managing John’s when he was 19, and together he and his family has built the 75-year-old business into a modern old fashioned corner grocery and high-end beer, wine and spirits retailer.

For the past 18 years he has volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America. He is a 21-year member and current Tree Lot Chair and Pancake Breakfast Chair for the Iowa City Optimist Club, a Junior Achievement veteran, and is the co-founder of the Northside Oktoberfest, Czech and Slovak Brewnost and Coralville Brrrfest.

His passion for history has also led him into a partnership with Author S.C. Sherman and Mokotsi Rukundo in producing the full-fledged motion picture-Death of a Brewer, based on the Iowa City Beer Riots of 1884 in the Northside. This movie will start filming in Iowa City very soon and will be released in the spring/summer of 2025.

S.C. “Steve” Sherman grew up an Iowa farm kid outside of Grinnell. His career has involved construction, entrepreneurship, and sales, but writing has always been a passion. His novels include: Leaving Southfields, a historical fiction; Hell and Back, a spiritual thriller; Moxie, a young adult fantasy; Mercy Shot, a political thriller, Lone Wolf Canyon, a modern day western, Seven Days and Six Nights, a supernatural thriller, and Beer Money, a historical fiction about the Iowa City Beer Riots of 1884 currently being produced as a full length motion picture. Books are available at Prairie Lights Books or online at Amazon and www.SCSherman.com. Signed copies of Beer Money are always available at John’s Grocery.

Steve recently won the UI Write Now Flash Writing Contest in the Adult Alumni Category.
