Downtown Iowa City spearheads community-driven placemaking efforts that transform public spaces into vibrant, temporary experiences. Through public art, temporary installations, outdoor dining, and seasonal pop-up shops, the district creates opportunities for workers, residents, and visitors to connect, interact, and experience the downtown in fresh, engaging ways. These initiatives energize the streetscape, boosting pedestrian activity and fostering a dynamic atmosphere.
Placemaking
Public Realm vibrancy through Public Art & Place Management
These placemaking initiatives are supported by the ICDD’s budget, the City of Iowa City, and generous sponsorships, all aimed at fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where art and culture are accessible to everyone. Collaborating with partners and supporters leads to greater success in activating underused areas, promoting safety, and enhancing downtown’s relevance for community engagement.
BenchMarks
The Benchmarks public art project in downtown Iowa City transforms everyday benches into colorful, creative canvases that introduce new art each Spring. By showcasing the work of local artists, the project adds vibrant street-level art to a gallery of 10 benches that surround the downtown playground.
IC Mural project
The Iowa City Mural Project has brought over 20 large-scale, vibrant artworks to downtown, showcasing both local and national artists. Each year, the program introduces unique public art to alleys and buildings, beautifying the urban landscape while reflecting the community’s culture and creativity, turning the city into a outdoor gallery.
Lighting
Investments in artistic lighting work to enhance its public spaces, from the whimsical Doodle Trees to creative alley lighting installations. These lighting projects provide brighten spaces while improving the perception of safety and create a more welcoming atmosphere in previously dimly lit areas.
Place Management Spaces
The Iowa City Downtown District operates and activates key public spaces seasonally in our two neighborhoods downtown and the Northside Marketplace; Black Hawk Mini Park and North Linn Street. As urban place managers of these areas, we ensure the spaces are a priority for investment, include accessible activities, and are inviting for everyone to enjoy. Through thoughtful programming and community engagement, these spaces are transformed seasonally into vibrant hubs where residents, workers, and visitors can gather, play, and experience their unique character.
Starting in 2020, the Northside neighborhood businesses and the ICDD collaborated to transform North Linn Street into a vibrant outdoor dining area. Featuring an interactive street mural, comfortable seating, and live music, the “Northside Outside” has become a popular destination in the Northside Marketplace for gathering from May through October.
