The Holiday Retail Open House is an annual tradition in Downtown. This Saturday, December 3rd, 24 shops & boutiques will collectively host open house events with treats, specials, and great gifts.

As a special treat, the ICDD is giving shoppers $15 for every $100 spent holiday shopping this Saturday. Save your receipts (from Saturday only), submit them to the form in our bio, and receive a $15 downtown gift card for every $100 of receipts you submit.

We are so happy to introduce complimentary concierge shopping for the 2022 holiday season. This new personal shopping program is designed for anyone seeking help finding the best gifts for those on their holiday shopping lists from downtown's locally owned shops with the ease of having someone else do the shopping.

Concierge shopping will be done by our friend Frankie Schneckloth each week. The program is a complimentary service available through December 19.

The Downtown Holiday Pop-Up Market, sponsored by @greenstatecu is back for the next month! Visit the shops in Black Hawk Mini Park in the Ped Mall for a festive and unique shopping experience. The market will see a rotating list of businesses throughout December and be one of the many stops to shop for this year’s gifts.

@benosflowers is hosting a wreath-making workshop in the shops this week! Appointments are not necessary but they recommend booking in advance to make sure there is enough room for your party. Reserve an appointment by calling: 319-499-7571.

A new original art installation commission by the

A new original art installation commission by the ICDD was installed this week and it is bringing bright lights and beautiful color to the pedestrian mall just as the days get cold and dark. Our friend and local artist, Ali Hval has designed six "Doodle Trees", with neon rope lighting. "My neon tree installation, I affectionately call Doodle Trees for their lively squiggles and swirls that trace the lower trucks like a free-flowing gesture drawing. I hope their vibrant neon lighting will add a little whimsy to a walk downtown during the coldest time of year", said Hval.

In addition to the Doodle Trees, the pedestrian mall is all dressed up for the winter months with Santa's sleigh, wrapped trees, and the popular Singing Tree installation encourages interaction with trees to impact their color and patterns. The Doodle Trees and Singing Trees will be on display throughout the entire winter to bring fun and color to the early dark evenings.

We are excited to showcase another new mural from downtown. “Tall Grass” was painted by our friend Thomas Agran and the 175’ mural was completed in just six days. The mural is located in the alleyway between Joseph’s Steakhouse and the Graduate Iowa City and was commissioned by Tailwind Group and Neumann Monson with funding by Tailwind Group.

"This painterly new mural features an atmospheric collage of cyanotypes of prairie plants made during an artist residency in the Flint Hills of Kansas – home to the largest intact remnant of tallgrass prairie. Cyanotypes, a Victorian photographic technique known for its brilliant Prussian blue color, were used by English botanist Anna Atkins to publish the first book illustrated by photography in 1843, the same time Iowa's prairies began to rapidly fall to Deere's moldboard plow." - Thomas Agran @agrantho
