World Wednesday: German Schultรผte

July 17 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Wednesday, July 17, 2024 –1:00pmย toย 2:00pm

Meeting Room A, Meeting Room B, Meeting Room C

On Wednesdays during our Summer Reading Program, elementary-age kids are invited to join us for a different event every week to understand and experience cultures around the world!

It’s only one month away from a brand new school year! Isn’t that exciting ? Or you just feel a little nervous? Do you know that in Germany there is a unique back-to-school routine that children are gifted a Schultรผte to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little sweeter. A Schultรผte (“school cone”) is a large cone-shaped, cornucopia-styled container attractively decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school supplies, and various other special treats. The tradition dates back to early 19th century when children celebrated the big milestone on their first day of school upon entering first grade. These days the Schultรผte is given to students of all ages by family, friends or partners as encouragement for the long academic road ahead. Join us today making a fun Schultรผte (“school cone”) from recycled posters, fill it up with treats and supplies, and take it home as your special back-to-school celebration!
